ACTS – of The Challengers is a mentoring program established by Carver alumni, under the leadership of Judge Michael W. Stuttley for current Carver Middle School students who are at-risk of failing. The term "at-risk youth" means youth who are jeopardized by potential problems in their environments such as, family dysfunctions, home, school, community, and social environments that may lead to educational failure, dropping out of school, or involvement in juvenile delinquency, including gang-related delinquent activity. This prevention program addresses the identified areas of concern by providing alternative enrichment activities and responsible relationships that encourage trust, increase self-awareness, nurture caring and respect among people. The mentors are adults (18 years of age or older), mainly Carver Alumni or former residents of the Altgeld Gardens community, who are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of young people. The natural phrase of the initiative is individualized independent mentoring; one on one life coaching that stresses awareness and addresses specific esteem issues. The planned component of the mentoring program includes coordinated supplemental activities and interactions, encouraging educational, personal, social, and career development opportunities. This component includes structured activities such as team building, tutoring, peer collaboration and coaching that will be used to maximize opportunities for young people to obtain guidance and models for supporting one another.
